This Little Golden Book is so fun, and I love J.P. Miller's illustrations. He was an animator for Disney and illustrated so many adorable books such as The Little Red Hen and I Am a Mouse. His style reminds me of Richard Scarry. Why is it that no one goes door-to-door to do Christmas caroling any more? I think that would be so fun! What are some of your favourite Christmas songs? Some of mine are Oh Holy Night, Mary's Boy Child, Baby It's Cold Outside, Christmas- Baby Please Come Home, Do They Know it's Christmas (I have to like that one, it's got Bono in it!), and so on. Growing up in a church with a lot of Dutch immigrants in it, including my grandparents, we always sang 'Ere Zij God' ("Glory to God") every Christmas.

ReplyDeleteI saw some wonderful carolers working their way down one of our fancier city blocks last year. Not far from our house, but unfortunately, I don't think I'd want to carol on our block, either. Sigh. Growing up in my very German Lutheran church, we always sang the older German hymns (in English) like "Lo, How a Rose is Springing", and we always sang the first verse of Silent Night in German. Now I'm Episcopalian and it kinda thrills me to sing "Gabriel's Message", because I always liked Sting's version from the first A Very Special Christmas album. ;o) Beyond those, though, I love "Ding Dong Merrily on High," "O Holy Night" and "The Coventry Carol", and as far as more recent songs, "The Christmas Waltz", "Nuttin' For Christmas", John Denver's "Christmas for Cowboys" and "Aspenglow"... Oh, and it's isn't Christmas if the hubby and I don't go around singing "Merry Christmas from the Family" (Robert Earl Keen) or "Fairytale of New York" (The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl).
That's a great list, Danzel! It's funny, I don't think I had ever heard Fairytale of New York until just a year or two ago.
DeleteLove "Ere Zij God"! It's like the Hallelujah chorus for Dutch people :) Haven't sung it in years but my parents still often go to a church where it's sung on Christmas Day.

ReplyDeleteI just picked this book up recently! Such a great golden. AND I've always thought it would be just fantastic to go caroling... but I'd need to be in a crowd of confident singers I think. :)
ReplyDeleteI come from the Soviet Union, and we didn't have a caroling tradition when I was growing up. After living here for many years I grew to love many English-language songs - my favorite is Do You Hear What I Hear. Thanks for sharing this vintage book with The Children's Bookshelf!
