We have a lot of Richard Scarry books.  Every time I see one at a used book sale, I grab it.  If it's one we already have, I figure we can use it to cut apart for crafts or save it to give to my nephews.  My mom has bought my daughter Keira a few of the bigger Richard Scarry books too.  There are over 300 of his books published - some of the material is re-used from book to book but that is still crazy impressive!  So this post will be the first of a few Richard Scarry ones - I will show some more of the books we have some other time.  I am sure many of you, like I do, have fond childhood memories of pouring over a Richard Scarry book, looking at all the things the characters were doing in Busytown, seeing what Huckle and Lowly were up  to, laughing at Pig Will and Pig Won't, and looking for Goldbug.  My 5-year-old daughter Keira enjoys watching the Busytown Mysteries show on Kids' CBC.  We also have the adorable app - see at this link - http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/richard-scarrys-busytown-hd/id463858993?mt=8

Here we go -

Random Fact #1 - I play the guitar.  Not that well, but enough to lead a sing-a-long.
#2 - I have lived in ... I think it's 16 different houses/apartments from birth to my current residence, if I haven't forgotten to count one along the way somewhere.
#3 - It is a miracle that I have managed to have 2 children - I had a  phobia of doctors/hospitals/needles/blood/pain etc.... ! Since going through childbirth you'd think that nothing would bother me anymore but it still does a little bit - but I am a LOT better than I was!
#4 - When I was growing up, my grandparents had horses.  I never became a proficient rider although I did ride from time to time.  That might explain why I read all of the Black Stallion series of books, Black Beauty, etc.
#5- My favourite band is U2.  I own all their albums/dvd's and quite a few books about them, have seen them in concert a few times, etc.  Have not met them yet as one of my friends recently did though!!

A Trilogy of Theo LeSieg- In a People House, I Wish I Had Duck Feet, and Come Over to My House

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

For those of you who don't know, Theo LeSieg is actually Dr. Seuss.  His real name is Theodore Geisel, and LeSieg is Geisel spelled backwards.  These are all such cute books, and I especially like the illustrations on Come Over to My House.  My daughter actually does not really like the book I Wish I Had Duck Feet.  She gets sad as she reads about  some of the things that happen to the main character as he experiences having duck feet, moose horns, an elephant nose, a sprinkler on his head, etc.  Near the end of the book he is imagining if he had all of those things at once - and how he would probably be locked up in a zoo...  my daughter gets very concerned as she sees the upset look on his face in the illustration... then the character decides as the end that he would rather just be himself.

Little Women - Golden Pleasure Classics Edition

 

 

 

 

 

 

This is an adapted version of Little Women - so cute, eh?  I read Little Women a few times as a child/teenager as well as its sequels, Little Men and Jo's Boys.  Reading about the school that Jo and Friedrick run together helped me to appreciate him more and to get over Jo and Laurie not being together.  :)  I loved the 1994 movie, I thought it was really well done.

P.D. Eastman is awesome.  He was a protegee of Dr. Seuss.  Can't wait to blog about all his books in the future!  This book just fascinated me as a child.  So fun!

Vintage Ladybird - The Little Lord Jesus and Come Play with Us (a Peter and Jane book)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ladybird books!!  I need to try and collect as many of these as possible!  Which ones did you have?  My grandmother gave me "The Little Lord Jesus" when I was 3 and a half and somehow it survived all these years- a notable accomplishment since I have moved quite a few times.  This Peter and Jane book - "Play With Us" is from a used book sale and you can see that some little person was using it for printing practice.  :)  The first Peter and Jane books came out in the sixties, then were updated in the early seventies, and then again in the late seventies, like this one.  The illustrations change slightly over the years to reflect the changing times and styles of clothes, parenting, and play.  Check out www.vintageladybird.com for lots of fun stuff including adorable ladybird gifts.
