The Surprise Doll

An adorable Wonder Book for you all today - The Surprise Doll, illustrated by Steffie Lerch in 1949.  As I flip through it, it gives off that lovely 'old book' smell.  I love the character Mary's doll collection from around the world and also the doll that looks just like her.

  My daughters have never really been into dolls that much.  These days they play with stuffed animals , My Little Ponies, Lego, Playmobil, etc.  Tegan just turned 4 and had her Lightning McQueen themed party .  Why do they only market that to boys, by the way??  So annoying !  Tegan is also drawing (scribbling) and doing stickers like crazy these days.  Keira , age 8, is busy with reading (lots of the How to Train Your Dragon series lately ), Minecraft, and practising violin.  And Brielle , my 1 year old?  Well she basically makes messes all day long !  It's Victoria Day weekend here in Canada and I'm hoping the fireworks don't wake any of my 3 kids up!

"Shopping With Mother", a Ladybird book, depicts a day of shopping at various places.  The family goes to the fish shop, greengrocer's, ironmonger's shop (What??  I had to look this up - it basically means hardware store, in Britain.) , the chemist's shop, the baker, the flower shop, the draper's shop, the butcher, and the toy shop.  Wow!  Not like nowadays when we just go to Walmart and be done with it, haha!  "Let's Go Shopping", a Wonder Book published in 1958, tells the tale of Sally Snappit (what a great name!) as she asks her mother about all the different foods in the supermarket and where they came from.  Love her cute little outfit.

Heidi- 2 Picture Book Versions

The first one here is a Little Golden Book illustrated by Corinne Malvern.  Love these sweet pictures of Heidi - a ray of sunshine in the midst of all the trouble around her.  It was first published in 1954.  The second storybook here is illustrated by Steffie Lerch.  Love the endpapers!!  I remember really enjoying the full version of the Heidi book when I was a kid.  I haven't read these to my daughter yet - am thinking of reading them to her soon and also trying to find the movie of Heidi with Shirley Temple.
