Shopping

Posted by Picasa"Shopping With Mother", a Ladybird book, depicts a day of shopping at various places.  The family goes to the fish shop, greengrocer's, ironmonger's shop (What??  I had to look this up - it basically means hardware store, in Britain.) , the chemist's shop, the baker, the flower shop, the draper's shop, the butcher, and the toy shop.  Wow!  Not like nowadays when we just go to Walmart and be done with it, haha!  "Let's Go Shopping", a Wonder Book published in 1958, tells the tale of Sally Snappit (what a great name!) as she asks her mother about all the different foods in the supermarket and where they came from.  Love her cute little outfit.

  1. I LOVE these! Let's bring back dressing up to go to the store! This makes me want to frequent flower shops for fresh bouquets more often.

    2. I looked up more info on Ladybird books out of curiosity. This one originally came out in '58?

    1. Wouldn't that be funny to dress up like these women from the 50's to go to Walmart one day?

  4. so where do you find all your divine books? Do you own them? Or are they library finds?

    1. So far all the books I have posted about I own. My plan is to blog about all the books in my collection and then if I eventually run out then I will find some library books to blog about. Well actually with one exception - I just took a whole pile of Dr. Seuss books out from the library for Keira's Dr. Seuss birthday party so since I have them out I will take some pics and blog about them soon. But I don't think I will ever totally run out of books in my collection to blog about because I am always buying more! I find almost all of my books at used book sales - I go to ones in my town as well as neighbouring cities and towns. Used book sales are always awesomely cheap but certain ones charge craaaaazy cheap prices for vintage books- like "Let's Go Shopping" that you can see on the cover only cost 10 cents! Once in a while I will also go to a used book store- their prices are a bit more than at a used book sale but you can often find stuff that is worth the extra couple dollars.

  7. These are great vintage finds. I don't remember seeing these books when I was little, but I can actually remember when shopping was just like this - white gloves and all :-)

    1. Wow - it's so much work to take kids grocery shopping as it is - I can't imagine having to dress up to do it as well! :)
