2 Big Golden Books

2 gorgeous Big Golden books for you today, illustrated by Garth Williams and Feodor Rojankovsky.  Both of these books were published in the early 1950's.  I especially like the horse picture.  When I was growing up my grandparents had Arabian horses.  I read all kinds of horse books and now my 7 year old is starting to do the same. We're getting ready for back-to-school here this weekend.  It has been a nice summer.  A lot cooler here than the previous few summers.  My oldest is starting grade 3 and my 3 year old will be going to preschool a few mornings a week.

 Bought this at a book sale for next to nothing -isn't it gorgeous?  This copy was published in 1958. I like the 'Little Girl with a Curl' poem - reminds me of my daughters. :)  And the picture from 'Pease Porridge Hot' reminds me of the 2 of them playing together.  The pictures by the iconic Eloise Wilkin, who illustrated 47 Golden Books and was called 'the soul of Little Golden Books'.  She often used her children and grandchildren and their friends as models for her pictures.  Wilkin was a devout Christian who often illustrated religious picture books or compilations of prayers.

What would a blog about vintage books for children be without a post about The Poky Little Puppy?  This copy that I have is a 'Big Golden Book' published in 1963.  Originally though, it was published in 1942.  It has sold about a bazillion copies.  At some point I want to get a copy of The Poky Little Puppy's First Christmas.  My older daughter looooves dogs so this is a perfect book for her.  I  also bought the IPhone app for her.  Aaahhh, the cuteness!!  Oh and check out this picture frame that I made for her- just a quick decoupage. My plan is to take a picture of her with all of her stuffed animal doggies all around her and give it to her in this frame.
