Scored this gorgeous book for a quarter!  Illustrated by Hilda Bowell in 1963.  A Child's Garden of Verses, written by Robert Louis Stevenson, was first published in 1885.  Did you know that it first appeared under the title 'Penny Whistles'?  I especially like reading the poem 'The Swing' to my kids.

  1. Oh, what an awesome find! (Especially at that price!) I love these poems so much, and it's so fun to see all the different illustrations out there. "The Swing" is my favorite, too, but I love her illustration for "The Wind."

  3. I’ve not called in for a while because I though you were away. But I’m very glad I did call in today. I see three lovely new posts to catch up on! I’ve seen lots of copies of this book but had no idea it was once called Penny Whistles – how intriguing. I’m off to read your other posts now. Barbara.

  4. I was doing a google search for this same version of the book and came upon your blog. My sister had it as a child and the pages that you have posted have been a wonderful trip down memory lane. Looking-glass River was one of my favorites but I loved them all, especially the illustrations. I have found a copy on etsy and am going to order it now for my sister for her birthday. She will be 55 and I am 58. :)

  5. I had this exact book as a child in the 1970's. Definitely some great memories. I also now have several PDF copies of this book from earlier editions. While the poems are familiar, I find myself to be missing Hilda Boswell's Illustrations. They really MADE these poems come alive for me!!!
