Just found this book the other day at my local children's consignment store - The Hair Book, illustrated by the awesome Roy McKie. My oldest daughter Keira was born with black hair. Her name actually means 'black-haired', by coincidence. But throughout her first year, all her hair fell out - for a while she looked like a little old man with a bald fringe! Towards the end of her first year her hair started growing back in again - blond. It started getting longer and became very curly and wavy. My hair was wavy as a child and my husband's was curly. At times it has been hard to deal with de-tangling Keira's hair. And don't even get me started on the year she got lice twice! Now at almost age 7 (birthday is this weekend) her hair has become more of a light brown colour and is not quite as curly as it was when she was younger but it is still definitely quite wavy - it's very cute. Now on to Tegan - my 2.5 year old. Her hair is still very short and baby-ish. Not much there to work with, and it is very blond. I see a bit of curl in there so I wonder if it will turn out like her sister's. When she was born her hair was a bit more of a reddish-brown. Both of my daughters also went through a weird phase as toddlers where they liked to rip strands of their hair out. My doctor said it was just one of those weird habits that toddlers sometimes get into as a comfort measure - I thought it so strange that they both came up with the same habit though! They even liked to put the strands of hair in their mouths - ewww! They never actually ingested it, but it was still gross. My third daughter is due in a few weeks - I wonder if she will have hair when she is born or if she will be a baldie. :)

My Book About Me- Dr. Seuss/Roy McKie

I love this book!! I had forgotten that I had it when I was young. I wish I still had it! Then I saw it was being re-published and available on Amazon and I ordered it last year for my daughter when she was in Senior Kindergarten. She has worked on it a little here and there so some of the pages are filled in and some are not- i.e. the types of pages where you have to count all the forks in the house - not done yet!! 'My Book About Me' is written by Dr. Seuss and illustrated by Roy McKie - I love these fun illustrations. Such a great do-it-yourself book for every kid to have.

Summer
Here is Summer - illustrated by the awesome Roy McKie. So how many of these activities in the pictures have YOU been doing this summer? I love the sense of the freedom and fun of childhood in these pictures. Makes me think of my own childhood. Endless days of riding bikes aimlessly around the neighbourhood, or maybe to the corner store for a treat, barbequed steaks that were my Opa's masterpieces, Family Olympics with my Grampa and aunts/uncles/cousins, long car trips with my parents and brother/sister, going on the old rickety roller coaster at the fairground, drinking from the hose, and long uninterrupted stretches of time with my beloved books. So far this summer with my daughters, we have been having lots of playdates with friends, and my older daughter has been doing swimming lessons/soccer/Kindermusik with her baby sister/kids cooking classes... so fairly busy, but still plenty of time to use her imagination and to relax. She is great at coming up with interesting things to draw, to build, or to act out. Since her baby sister came along she now has another person to involve in her play so she loves that!

A Trilogy of Theo LeSieg- In a People House, I Wish I Had Duck Feet, and Come Over to My House
For those of you who don't know, Theo LeSieg is actually Dr. Seuss. His real name is Theodore Geisel, and LeSieg is Geisel spelled backwards. These are all such cute books, and I especially like the illustrations on Come Over to My House. My daughter actually does not really like the book I Wish I Had Duck Feet. She gets sad as she reads about some of the things that happen to the main character as he experiences having duck feet, moose horns, an elephant nose, a sprinkler on his head, etc. Near the end of the book he is imagining if he had all of those things at once - and how he would probably be locked up in a zoo... my daughter gets very concerned as she sees the upset look on his face in the illustration... then the character decides as the end that he would rather just be himself.
